Hippocampal Striatal Interactions in a Picture Memory Task
نویسنده
چکیده
The organization of learning and memory in the brain is widely held to be made of functionally distinct memory systems. It is important to identify how these complex neural systems interact with one another. This thesis investigates the interaction of the systems involved to solve a simple discrimination task. Acquisition of this task can be supported by hippocampal and non-hippocampal systems. The purposes of these experiments are: (1) to identify the non-HPC system supporting picture discrimination, and (2) characterize how the systems interact. Rats received various lesions either before or after training and assessed on acquisition or retention performances. The results indicate that picture discriminations can be acquired by hippocampal or striatal systems, and that the medial prefrontal cortex is not involved in an essential way. Furthermore, the findings suggest that a competitive interaction occurs supporting the idea that the hippocampus interferes with striatal acquisition of the picture discrimination task. iv Table of Contents 1.

Memory influences on hippocampal and striatal neural codes: effects of a shift between task rules.
Interactions with neocortical memory systems may facilitate flexible information processing by hippocampus. We sought direct evidence for such memory influences by recording hippocampal neural responses to a change in cognitive strategy. Well-trained rats switched (within a single recording session) between the use of place and response strategies to solve a plus maze task. Maze and extramaze e...

Striatal dopamine depletion is a key pathophysiological feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) causing motor and nonmotor symptoms. Research on nonmotor symptoms has mainly focused on frontostriatal functions. However, dopamine pathways ascending from the ventral tegmental area also innervate hippocampal structures and modulate hippocampal-dependent functions, such as spatial memory. Using a virtu...

The striatum and hippocampus are conventionally viewed as complementary learning and memory systems, with the hippocampus specialized for fact-based episodic memory and the striatum for procedural learning and memory. Here we directly tested whether these two systems exhibit independent or coordinated activity patterns during procedural learning. We trained rats on a conditional T-maze task req...

When Huntington's disease (HD) patients are tested on cognitive tasks that involve both striatal and hippocampal memory systems, a decline in their striatal function is compensated for by an increase in hippocampal activity that allows these patients to achieve an optimal performance [Voermans, N. Background: There are some convincing shreds of evidence indicating that memory can direct attention. The local efficiency of an area in the brain, as a quantitative feature in a complex network, indicates how the surrounding nodes can transfer the information when a specific node is omitted. This feature is a scale for measuring efficient integration of information in the brain. Objectives:...
